Ski Season Prep + Opening Dates

We’re into November and with that comes thoughts of the (hopefully) amazing winter ahead! Consider this your guide to prepping for a great ski season. You’ll also find the tentative opening dates for the local resorts, in case you were wondering!

Season Passes

The closer the season gets, the higher the prices for gear and passes increase. However, there are still a few opportunities to catch the last of the ‘early bird’ specials. When in doubt, give your resort of choice a call and see what offers are still on the table. We’ve heard of discounts happening until November 7th- so you better hurry!

If you took advantage of the deals earlier this year, now is the time to pickup your pass and take your photo. If you’re not planning to get a season pass, many resorts offer go cards and hold specials for black friday… so be on the lookout for those! Lots of resorts also have payment plans if budgeting is a factor.

Gear

It’s better to tune your gear before the first big pow day (you’ll be glad you did)… wax skis and snowboards, and make any upgrades before the fluffy stuff starts falling! If you’re on the hunt for new gear, check out the last gear swap of the season:

42nd Annual Park City Ski & Snowboard Swap // Nov. 7-9 at Basin Recreation Field House in Kimball Junction, 1388 New Main St., Park City. ParkCitySkiSwap.com

Gear swaps are a great way to save money on last years models or trade gently used equipment. Of course online shopping is another easy way to score savings… especially with the holidays around the corner!

Snow Safety

If you’re not up-to-date on training or snow safety, now is the perfect time to inform yourself. Learn about avalanche characteristics, snowpack, terrain assessment, safe travel techniques and rescue techniques before you head out to the backcountry. Classes can be pricey, but are worth it.

KSL shared a number of upcoming courses to attend. Utah Avalanche Center also has a number of classes, including Backcountry 101 for Snowshoers (Dec. 4 and 6 with an in-class day at REI and a field day at Brighton Fire Station) and Women’s Free Beacon Clinic (Dec. 8 at Alta Ski Resort’s Albion Grill). For hours, prices and a full list of classes, go to UtahAvalancheCenter.org

American Avalanche Institute conducts numerous classroom and field-based avalanche courses in Salt Lake City and Park City. The earliest classes are Dec. 4-7 and Dec. 11-14; classes are available through February. For hours, prices and a full list of classes, go to AmericanAvalancheInstitute.com
